I order a martini. About 90% of the test is to see if they ask "what kind?"(And if they do, get a beer. A bottled beer).

Whatever they do, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. But you should get a strong, cold, transparent drink with vermouth and olives.

Well, traditionally a ginger beer cocktail is either a "buck" or a "mule:"

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/24/FDTJ18K2UD.DTL

So maybe your unnamed drink should be a Young Buck? Or a Baby Buck? Or a Hawaiian Doe? (And the Hawaiian Buck would have rum in as well.)

Thank you for highlighting the Jamaican Ten-Speed. I recently received Regan's Joy Of Mixology as a gift, but had not made it that far into the book.

I am always looking for palatable Midori-based cocktails because, while I strongly dislike Midori, my wife really likes it - and she often requests cocktails made from it. This one was a good find.

Hey, I'll agree with you that vodka in a cocktail is usually just water and ethanol. And that's the way a lot of vodkas produced for consumption in the US are made. But there is a tradition of making vodkas in places like Poland and Russia where the vodka retains a lot flavour and bite. Those are made to be drunk neat. The same tradition also contains things like barrel-aged vodka and lightly-infused vodkas that fill the positions usually held by whisky and some kinds of cocktails elsewhere. Cocktails in those places are fairly rare, but you can find a few 'local' cocktails that take into account the 'extra' flavours like the Polish Tatanka.

You've reminded me to put this up for your consideration, the tweeked version of the Gamma Ray Burster I entered in this year's Skepchick drink contest - the Gamma Ray Burster:

2 oz. Cachaça
1.5 oz. Tang made w/Tonic Water
0.5 oz. Blue Curaçao
0.5 oz. Campari

Pour over ice, stir. It still seems to need a bit of diluting, it tastes best when the ice has melted a bit. I may try cutting it w/another 0.5 oz. of tonic water.

As a skeptic, I'm shocked (SHOCKED!) at your open embrace of dogma. The needles of ice sword fighting in a shaken martini are sublime. Also in my defense, I offer this essay by Bernard DeVoto, a member of The Greatest (Drinking) Generation: bit.ly/12PYCH

Not a Mad Men comment, but a drink recipe for your critique. This one started as a Skepchick drinks contest entry, but has since been tweeked a bit:
Death from the Skies

(First, prep Tang & Tonic: 4 Tbsp. Tang dissolved in 10 oz. tonic water)

4 oz. Tang & Tonic
2 oz. Malört
1 oz. Grenadine
3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Mix in pint glass, to off glass with ice, stir.

Will gladly take any suggestions for tweeks or improvements.

For me most important is to have profound knowledge, to think and not to generalize too much - not only talking discussing religion. I think you, Sasha, do it exactly the right way, e.g. dealing with Vodka, having strict and provocative views and suggestions, but not forgetting it's worth (even not overestimating it).

Seen from Germany this seams really absurd. This topic (religion) seams not not be treated as seriously as in the US.
I see myself as a catholicistic atheist - I like the Pope (not everything he says) and enjoy parts of the catholic community, atmosphere and the christian moral (please don't misunderstand me: I'm not talking about this fundamentalistic bullshit (I hate fanaticism), but about the principles our western communinty is built upon which are influenced by the church), but don't believe in Jesus or life after death (that's just ocult). It's very common here to relativize your believe and I know no one that would react like James did (sounds like a joke to me).

For me most important is to have profound knowledge, to think and not to generalize too much - not only talking discussing religion. I think you, Sasha, do it exactly the right way, e.g. dealing with Vodka, having strict and provocative views and suggestions, but not forgetting it's worth (even not overestimating it).

On Brilliant Gameologists we have mentioned our Atheism several times and no one has ever even really mentioned it. And I happen to know that several of our listeners are extremely big Christians.

I don't think the issue here is religion, it is people looking to be dicks.

I could understand if you said something that offended him, but just because you are an Atheist seems odd.

I wonder if doesn't watch Lord of the Rings because Ian McKellen is an Atheist.

I could be wrong, because it's been a long time since I was a church going man, but doesn't The Good Book also say not to judge?

And really, it's not like Sasha is saying "Now, use sacremental wine in this sangria, and make sure you add a few drops of blood of Christian Babies" or anything.

(additional lulz: my Captcha words are "lording" and "Irish". hehe)

Man, I LOVE this cocktail. It reminds me of the chalky candies I had growing up called 'sweet 'N sour bleep blips' from grocery store dispensing machines in Oakland, CA. I order these now exclusively now from Murray at Zig Zag in Seatle. Yum!

Hi Sasha,
I'm glad I discovered this new episode of your show on my ipod this mornig, because I think I listened to the first two episodes 4 or 5 times each already.
A few weeks ago, Stefan and me made a Ramos Gin Fizz like you told now - passing it and shaking it like hell and as a result we got butter, which didn't surprise me too much because that's how it is made: shaking cream. But how can I avoid that (it was not drinkable)? A longer time ago we also had a good result but don't know what we made wrong this time.
Cheers,
Christoph from Frankfurt/Germany

Weird; I wrote the first post above mid-binge, and when I checked the next day and didn't see it, I assumed, you know, the obvious (sometimes things happen when you're drinking). So I posted my next day thoughts. Now it has shown up- what back alley internet dive did that message stop at on it's way home?

Hey, Sasha.
I enjoyed your second podcast very much, and I have the perfect theme music for your "Bad Ass" segment. I'm not sure how those licensing rights work, but you can check the song out on my blog, where I also have some pics of the Skeptic and Errol Flynn Fizz.

Hey, coming from you that means a lot! Glad you enjoyed the show. I hope my ENnie plugs help you guys get over the top!

As I've said before, my wife is allergic to dairy and wheat as well, so I'm well-versed in adapting recipes. Wheat mostly comes up in vodka and beer, but dairy is something we come across a whole lot. I'll think about that one, so keep your eyes peeled.

Fresh sugar, or simple, syrup uses regular white cane sugar. It's just important to store it in your refrigerator. All sorts of things like to grow in sugar solutions, so you need to check to make sure the syrup hasn't taken on weird colors, tastes, or become cloudy.

Sasha,
I finally got a chance to listen to your podcast and it is really, really good. I come from a strong Martini & Single Malt Irish whiskey / Alton Brown style nerd Culinary background.

Unfortunately I can't eat or drink anything with wheat or dairy due to allergies. So maybe that's a topic for the show?

I'm a little hungover today; I got a bottle of Tuaca and gave your Skeptic a try. Very nice! The spiciness of the Old Overholt went nicely with the citrus notes in the liqueur. A touch sweet for my taste, so I (after several tries) settled on 3/4 oz Tuaca. I also tried it with barrel aged Fee Bros., but it had too much cinnamon, so I went back to the Angustora. Good job!

Dude, the Skeptic is a keeper. I had to get some Tuaca, but I really like the spiciness of the rye with the citrus notes of the Tuaca. It was a bit sweet for me; 3/4 of an ounce of Tuaca trims it down for my palate. I also tried the Barrel-aged Fee Bros. but it had too much cinnamon. (So yeah, that means I am 4 drinks in- 2 as described, one with less Tuaca and Fee Bros., one with 1/2 oz. Tuaca and Angustora) take my comments with a grain of salt.) So if you tend to like Perfect Manhattans, then back off on the Tuaca; but keep the Angustora. This is a drink that goes into the rotation. Good work!

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you like the show. The Brooklyn Lamp looks like it's pretty tasty. When I give it a try I'll be sure and mention it on the podcast!

Hi,
I'm a german cocktail nerd and heard of your podcast in Mr.Martini's one. I really like it and will definitely stay.
I absolutely agree in trying new cocktails and I've got one for you (I invented myself and is one of my favourite drinks):
The Brooklyn Lamp:
2 oz Williams Christ (40%, Pear Schnapps)
1 oz Lemon juice (fresh)
1 oz Rose sirup
1-2 dashes Lemon Bitters or Grapefruit Bitters (as I tryed it a few days ago)
Shake and strain into a Martini glass.
Garn.: red berry, not too sweet (e.g. cranberry or in a pinch: cherry)
Enjoy!
Greetings from Frankfurt/Germany,
Christoph

Thanks so much for the comment!

When you do give it a try, let me know what you think. I'll be including another one of my creations in the next episode. (Look for it in about a week.)

Thanks so much for that podcast. Hope to hear more very soon. I laughed out loud when you said "All my friends are gay for the French 75."
I plan on trying the Errol Flynn Fizz this week. I'll post back with a review on the taste and color as I, too, will be using homemade Grenadine.

Egg white is a traditional ingredient in fizzes. Not so much these days, but going back a few years. The shade of the grenadine will definitely vary the color of the drink quite a bit. I'm glad you enjoyed trying it, and thanks for the comment!

I tried your Errol Flynn Fizz this evening, after listening to your podcast. I used Mount Gay Special Reserve, Velvet Falernum,Canada Dry Club Soda, and my own homemade grenadine. So it didn't come out pink, but closer to the shade of a medium ale. Very refreshing, but the appearance is a bit turgid; where did you get the idea of egg white and soda?

-Being a solo host is tough. There should always be someone there with you ...

-I would say different people but rotate them.. this way there are failure voices.

-I'm thinking that Recipes are going to be the most popular
